Chale 19Th April
Friday evening Mick and I climbed down chale cliffs and were on the beach and set up for 7.15pm. Rays were the target, so clip down rigs, 4/0 sakuma mantra hooks and large sandeels were hit as far as possible. The sea was a nice chocolate brown and there was a large swell. We weren't expecting anything till darkness fell, but just gone 8pm and I get a slack line bite, wasn't really sure it was a fish or whether the large waves had dislodged the weight. but after striking there was a definite weight on the line and thanks to mick dragging it out of the surf my first Ray of the year was on the beach.
A cracking 8lb 3oz painted ray (small eyed).
Photos taken I slipped her back into the sea.
We were treated to the usual impressive chale sunset and after the initial success were hopeful of a good night.
Well after that Mick managed a pout and I had 2,
But the surf got larger and with it came the weed, by 2am we'd had enough of the weed and called it a night. The climb back up was frankly dangerous and we doubt we'll be back there any time soon.
Off out again tonight to see if I can bag a spotted ray at Yaverland.
