Again, would not recommend cheap and cheerfull. Penn Surfmaster or surfblaster, any of the Shimano FS reels, the Aerlex is the basic model but is SUPERB. the Okuma distance surf or if you want to go daft a Fox Stratos1200. Some of the mid range Daiwa FS reels are very good too.
As with ANYTHING to do with fishing it's all personal choice.

Ive got a Cormoran Big Ben FS reel. Not the most expensive BUT it does the job I need it for.

No chance mate cut my arm of and I bet I got ABU running through it like a stick of Blackpool rock lol
And of course if you ever fish with braid from the beach you MUST always use a fixed spool NEVER a multiplier ! It's dangerous !

Birdy, I'll have to get you on some medication that can cure your ABU addiction. We will cure you one day.

Just commenting on the last post, if, you use braid on a FS reel PLEASE make sure you use a good quality finger stall or better still invest in a (and I do mean 'invest') in a Breakaway 'Canon', they are simply stunning, I used braid on my FS, not thinking, I let fly and the braid went down to the bone on my middle finger. Bloody and painfull. NEVER again!!!!Yes they are £10 BUT well worth it.

But you must still use a nylon monofilament leader when using braid

How about meeting a little earlier for the proposed NW get together in spring.
An hour or two early for those of us who may be more than a little rusty, would be beneficial.

it is a type of fishing line, the regular line most people use is Mono filament or Mono (probably spelt it wrong LOL) it is also used on the regular shop bought rigs such as Makky feathers.
but Braid is a lot less stretchy than mono and is more expensive, Better people than me can explain it, i have never used Braid to any extent

Ok sorry for the Latin lesson lol but monofilament means "One fiber" one strand of usually nylon or fluorocarbon. Braid is a multifiber line that is a woven product that is stronger, thinner, and has less stretch than monofilament and gives a more direct contact to the fish.
However it is MUCH more expensive than monofilament and is much less forgiving to use as Ian found out, sorry to hear that mate.

In all honesty, I would not use braid at all(although I do use it for pike fishing) it shows EVERY movement in the tide and for a novice angler can be VERY confusing. You tend to strike at EVERYTHING. I have used it twice for sea fishing and one VERY sore finger Sad and striking at everything now explains why it is on my pike reel Laughing Seriously, stick to mono for now(still invest in a 'Canon' though) Very Happy
