Friday night lesson in Bassing
Friday 13th, unlucky for some .
Met up with Lighty at 6pm and we were fishing one of his spots, I hadn't fished here before. Nice stretch of beach with clear ground alongside a reef stretching from the beach out to sea.
I set up 30 yards away and Lighty opted to fish alongside the reef.
I started with a clip down at distance for hopefully an Undulate Ray and close in with a flapper and strips of mackeral for a Turbot or Pout for bait.
At dusk just after casting the flapper rod out return to find the other rod with a big slack line, could this be my Ray? Tightened the line and felt something tugging struck but there wasn't a lot of weight but a new species was beached a Scad.
Darkness arrived and the Pout came on the feed, after catching half a dozen I changed the flapper to a clipped down pulley and cast a fillet of fresh Pout out.
Things were quiet till just gone 2am with the tide just on the turn, lighty gets a good bite close in and a good Bass is landed going 6lb 6ozs
He quickly followed this with another of 7lb 10oz.
This is when I tried the same tactics but it seems the Bass were holding close to the reef so all I could manage was more scad pout and doggies.
Again Lighty was in a smaller fish of 3lb 15oz and then he followed this with a cracker of 10lb 12oz.
Finally he finished the night off with another of 5lb 11oz.
What a session. Well next weekend weather permitting we'll be off to another reef mark and this time I'll make sure I'm close to the reef.

Scad, quite a common fish also known as a horse mackeral, usually swims with the Mackeral.
