Re: Rod and Reel
don't ever feel embarrassed on here, we all starded new to the sport.
rod and reel that you have is fine.
i use 15lb main line with a 60lb shock leader,
as for weights i use 5oz and go to 6oz when the sea is rough.
if you need any more info or somthing explaining just ask mate we are all here to help
regards chris

hi mate
no problem with question when i started i never used shot leader untill someone told me. find out what weight the rod will cast up to and the rule of thum is normaly
x10 of the lead ie: if your rod will cast up 6oz then i would use a 60IIb leader 10x6oz =60IIb which is ok for all weights up to 6oz but then use a standard 15IIb cheep line to begin with
as you will have a few problems the more you get used to it the better line you buy. tieing the main line to shot leader. in thre tackle shop look for tapered shot leader 15IIb to 60IIb then get some old fishing line and practice tieing the shot leader knott time after time till you get used to doing it once you get that then try the tapered leader it is difficult trying to tie 60 to 15 but easy to tie 15 to 15 at the end of the day its just practice and you will get used to doing it the more times you do it
hope this has helped mate any more just ask away no probs

Re: Rod and Reel
if you want to cast a bit further when youve sorted your line and shock leader check out u tube there are plenty of casting videos from basic layback casts to the advanced pendulum cast this will give you some pointers then you can get on a decent sized field to practice ,but just beware of anyone in your line of site ,a crack off can travel quite a distance have fun andy

Hi Leeroy,
Just to add my sixpenth in lol, never ever be embarrassed to ask for advice, even seasoned professionals never know it all....just have to watch Henry Gilbey, Matt Hayes etc etc and they admit they don't know it all.....
You can get some great ideas and advice here, I already have! BUT, never be afraid or embarrassed to ask for advice etc in the tackle shop that you go to....if you ask nicely they will show you a different variety of knots and stuff, and if they are nice and honest they will even say why don't you try this it'll cost you less (some will laugh at that but at my local tackle shop that is exactly what they say and do).
Tight lines!!
Andy

Re: Rod and Reel
The ONLY silly question is the one you dont ask!!!
Enjoy the site, ask as many questions as you want, no-one will think bad of it as we all started somewhere and as stated above we all are STILL learning!
