Give It Large For Lugworms
One large worm or four small ones, the attraction is the same
Large lugworms are generally preferred by anglers fishing for cod, simply because thy are economical and are viewed as a highly attractive bait, with more blood and juices than the smaller worms.
The largest blacks and yellowtails are the most popular, especially for cod. However, blacks which are gutted and yellowtails, deteriorate fairly quickly when gutted and as they decay after four days ther skin and flesh becomes soft and sticky and they are far less attractive or effectiveas bait for cod, ( although great for dabs)
Yellowtails are often sold live and whole in seawater and because they are stored alive in water they can become washed out and sloppy. In this state they are also considered less effective as bait. Common lug are always sold as live and, although they have soft fragile skins, their blood and juice content is ideal, Bigger worms are better value.
In general while you can use one or two blacks or yellowtails effectively for cod, to make a decent bait of common worms reqires double that amount. That's where many anglers fail, because they don't put enough worms on the hook. Some anglers prefer four separate small worms because they lose their scent and blood trail more slowly than one large worm.
Lug are quickly ruined by high temperatures and water so keep them away from the heater in the car and out of rain on the beach.
